Punicalagin is the major ellagitannin found in pomegranates. Reports have been made of Punicalagin producing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. Punicalagin can prevent accumulation of cardiac triglyceride and cholesterol associated with high-fat diet-induced obesity. Myocardial damage can also be controlled by Punicalagin, via AMPK-mediated modulation of mitochondria and phase II enzymes. Punicalagin is also known as 2,3-(S)-Hexahydroxydiphenoyl-4,6-(S,S)-gallagyl-D-glucose.
