(±)-Anatoxin A is a racemic preparation of the cyanotoxin alkaloid Anatoxin A, a potent AChR agonist. Potent modulation of the AChR-ion channel is reported at nanomolar concentrations with the (+)-Anatoxin and at low micromolar concentrations with the (-)-Anatoxin A isomer. This agonism promotes influx of Na⁺ and efflux of K⁺ through the ion channel, producing overstimulation of cholinergic neurons and subsequent neurotoxicity.
