C-Fos is the product of an immediate early gene. It is a major nuclear target for signal transduction pathways involved in the regulation of cell growth, differentiation, and transformation. The Fos and Jun proteins from dimeric complexes that stimulate transcription of genes containing AP-1 regulatory elements. Studies in rodents have shown that c-Fos is essential in regulating neuronal cell survival versus death. c-Fos is induced by neuronal activity, regulates the expression of the kainic acid receptor GLUR6 and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
