Histone (calf thymus) is a natural mixture of the histones H1, H2A, H2B, H3 and H4. Histones are proteins that the cell uses to compact, package, and order DNA. They are the main protein component of chromatin, and play an important role in gene regulation. Posttranslational histone modification such as phosphorylation, methylation, acetylation, and ubiquination, etc. alter the interaction between DNA and the histones giving rise to the "Histone Code" which is thought to play a major role in gene regulation. Histone modification is a major area of research in the relatively new field of biology called Epigenetics.
