Prostaglandin G2 is the first intermediary in the COX pathway which is stable enough to be isolated and characterized - the C15 hydroperoxide of PGH2 . Under normal conditions, PGG2 is quickly metabolized by COX-1 and COX-2 to give PGH2, which is the main predecessor for the 2-series prostaglandins and thromboxanes - important mediators of biological functions. Prostaglandin G2 is an activator of NOS.
